Description
HYLA is an epic fantasy tale of endurance, adaptation, creativity, magic, devotion, reconciliation, and romance that spans seven generations. Time is running out . . . In the aftermath of the Terrible Wars between the men of HYLA and the Spellcasters who had come to enslave them, the Theft (a manifestation of a vengeful spell cast by the enemy invaders) grows in strength and destructive power with each generation. The men of HYLA return from the wars, sick and broken, to the ruins of their lives. With tremendous courage and strength they rebuild their world in fourteen years, stubbornly refusing to abandon their traditions. Under the Enemy’s curse, more daughters than sons have survived. At the first Fair Pairing since the Terrible Wars ended, thirty daughters of marriageable age are paired by the Wheel as planned, but thirteen draw blank tiles and return home alone. A group of “unwanteds” forms to make a plan for the future. Together they make their way to a place that offers them natural protection and early warnings — the Cliffs. The daughters build shelters and put all their energies into offspring of a different kind. Here they become skilled weavers, artists, musicians, marvelous carvers of wood, and gifted Healers and Observers. HYLA, Volume 1, is the story of three successive Leaders at the Cliffs: Mother, Skyla, and Kylara. Each has a different philosophy of leadership. Mother’s accidental discovery of the Fortress, a vast network of caves within the Cliffs makes possible the growth and expansion of the community, the establishment of the healing Shelters she envisions, and Welcome House, the center for learning, healing, and the arts. The enemy’s vengeance continues as news spreads that not only are twin births becoming less common but frequently, one lives and one is stillborn, making each birth a hideous “amalgam of celebration and mourning”. The ranks of the Cliffdwellers grow as more daughters turn away from marriage, out of fear or rejection. Childbirth becomes rare and increasingly dangerous in the fourth generation. Ecstatic joy at the birth of a child is all too soon eclipsed by the mother's death at the third full moon she witnesses. The population is dwindling. Every orphaned child has been adopted. Generations of Healers have sought a remedy for the Theft. Can no cure be found? The fate of HYLA hangs in the balance.
