Description
The six short stories and five flash fiction pieces in Americana show Americans facing radically shifted realities or questioning realities that seem unchangeable. A man’s days are so identical that he wonders if he’s really alive. A woman has imaginary friends to distract her from a toxic marriage. An obsessive-compulsive finds his morning routine dangerously impacted by the absence of his estranged husband. A couple vacationing in Venice see things through their camera that they never wanted to see. In “Nobody Likes to Be Sick,” included in this packet, reality is both shattered and magnified by a runaway illness. I’m very much influenced by music, and see my stories as compositions of rhythms, melodies, and motifs established, developed, distorted, and repeated. “Nobody Likes to Be Sick” is a characteristic composition in that regard. (And I wrote much of the first draft recovering from major surgery on strong painkillers. Just saying.) Americana, it seems to me, is about people trying to get by, get on, get out, but never to go back. I’m beyond excited to watch it come into the world, look forward to hearing readers’ reactions to the stories, and hope you enjoy it. The many faces of curiosity. Which one do you see? Welcome to Bill Hemmig's Americana, a collection of snapshots that capture the everyday American experience. From filling the bird feeder to a realtor conference (behind) the happiest place on Earth to the picturesque canals of Venice, each story celebrates the eccentricities hidden inside the fabric of an ordinary life.
